"If I can't get a job in Canada, I'll just go back to Hong Kong."

That was what went through my mind at the age of 17. New country. Zero network. English as a second language. I did not go back. After completing my degree at UBC, I spent the next 27 years at KPMG. I became a Tax Partner, People Leader, and a member of the partner candidate selection committee in Vancouver.

But career success didn't make my insecurity go away. For years, I shrank in some rooms and assimilated in others.

As a mentor through KPMG, Ascend Canada and UBC, I watched countless highly capable Asians live a similar story. Some shrink and fade into the background. Others change themselves to fit in.

Everyone's version is a little different. But the underlying commonalities are unmistakable. That is our shared story.

What is blocking Asian talent from reaching full potential is more than systemic bias. Our own choices are part of the blockage.

It took years of learning and inner work before I discovered the power of authentic leadership. Since then, I have helped many mentees and coaching clients with their transformation. Soon it became obvious to me that there was a lack of culturally specific resources Asians need to transform from great to extraordinary.

Having participated in the Authentic Leader Development Program at Harvard Business School, I began to ponder how an ecosystem could be created to meet the culturally specific needs of Asian leaders.

And that was the birth of igluminate, and the start of a new chapter of our shared story.
